About This Tz safaris
Landscape: A huge, collapsed volcanic caldera — steep rim encircling a broad, fertile crater floor of grassland, swamps and small forest patches. The rim offers sweeping panoramas; the floor concentrates animals in a compact area.
Animals: High densities of grazing herbivores (zebra, gazelle, wildebeest), large herds of buffalo and elephant, resident lion prides and hippo in the crater’s lakes. Critically, scattered black rhino survive in the crater’s grasslands. Great birdlife includes flamingos on the soda lakes.
History / notes: Ngorongoro is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its unique geology formed from a massive volcanic explosion and collapse hundreds of thousands of years ago. The Maasai live and graze cattle on parts of the crater rim and surrounding highlands, weaving conservation with pastoral life.
