Serengeti National Park — The Endless Plains & Great Migration
Landscape: Vast open savannahs, short-grass plains, seasonal black clay pans and scattered kopjes (small granite outcrops). The park is volcanic in origin, the plains stretching to the horizon with dramatic sunrises and huge skies.
Animals: Home to massive wildebeest and zebra herds (the Great Migration), large lion prides, cheetah, leopard, hyena, elephant, giraffe, buffalo and abundant plains antelope. Birdlife is rich — raptors, bustards and thousands of vultures.
History / notes: The Serengeti ecosystem supports one of the most famous annual mammal migrations on Earth — a roughly clockwise movement driven by rains and grass growth. The name comes from the Maasai word siringet meaning “endless plains.” This area has long been central to conservation discussions because of its intact migratory routes and cultural Maasai ties.
